San Francisco Zoo Trip

Danny is on Spring break this week, and so Ralph decided to take the day off of work and take us all to the San Francisco Zoo. It was a little tiny bit drizzly in the morning, but the day turned out to be a really nice day, not too hot and not too cold. Jackson liked the polar bears the best, and Rebecca's favorite was the horses in the farm/petting zoo area (how exotic). The day ended with a trip to Carls' Jr. on the way home--always a family favorite...hehe.
I just love hanging out with my family!

Prayer for my Daddy

Please pray for my dad, who has an aneurysm in his aorta, just below his heart. He is feeling fine, but this can rupture, and so needs to be taken care of. My dad is an awesome, Godly man, and we all love him bunches, and so we just pray for God's hand to be on him. No surgery date has been set yet, as he has some more tests to do first. I just pray for wisdom for the doctors involved and for my parents as they make decisions, (and that they will be sure to ask for and accept help as they need it!). I know that God is good, and He loves us, and He has my dad in the palm of his hand.

(And just for fun, here I am with my dad and my mom when I am 9 days old on the way to my first day of church.)

Jackson Masters the Chopsticks!

A few weeks ago, the missionaries staying in our mission house brought chopsticks to church. Samantha worked hard to figure out how to use them. Jackson was not to be outdone. He had these craisins, and kept trying, with one chopstick in each hand, to pick up a craisin. He just wasn't coordinated enough to do it. But finally, he figured out a way he could do it--by spearing the craisin. He was quite proud of himself and went around saying he had mastered the chopsticks!!

Cara's Birthday Party Pictures...

It was a good day.
Family, friends, lasagne, presents, banana splits.
What else could a girl ask for?

**Uncle "Sock" and Omi were here too, but somehow missed my camera.**

Cara's song

I sorta lost a week due to being sick, and actually I think there were two different bugs going through the house at once, and some of us were lucky enough to get them both, while some only got the 1-2 day nasty stomach thing. One minute Jackson and I were having cold like symptoms, the next minute almost the whole house was, well throwing up. YUK! I'm still not back to myself, but at least the stomach thing came and went rather quickly. And so far Ralph was saved, so that was a good thing (for him, at least). Anyway, I wanted to post the song Cara wrote and sang in church, and then soon I will post some pictures of her birthday party.
Oh, I spoke too soon. Ralph just walked in the door from work with a bad headache (and I guess it was slow at work), so hopefully that is not the start of the stomach thing. And here he caught me loafing on the computer, after I have been so busy all morning, so I better go and look busy. :-)

A day in the life of the Houseful of blessings, live blog.

Because I'm a copycat, and because some of the bloggers I read are posting a day in their lives, I thought I would do the same. It's a live blog, which means I will post the first part, and then throughout the day, as long as I don't get too sidetracked, which is quite possible, I will keep updating. So here goes. This is not a typical day because I have been feeling kinda sicky all week and so we have been sleeping in, but anyways, here is today:

3:00 am....Samantha brought Jackson to me. He was coughing and wanted Mommy. So we rocked for a while, then I got him some cough syrup, took him potty, and went ahead and took him to bed with me, since he is kinda sick and it was easier than making him go back to his own bed.

4:10 am (or so, I wasn't actually watching the clock...) Ralph got up, took his shower, grabbed his coffee and lunch, and headed out to face the lions...er, headed off to work, so he can provide for us, the family who adores him. :-)

Somewhere around 6:30....Danny left for work, but since I was sleeping, I can't really say exactly when...

8:00 am.....Finally dragged myself out of bed and read a chapter in my Bible. Then woke the sleeping beauties. Told them to get busy, and went off for my shower....

8:30 am.....Breakfast for those who have their morning chores done...ok, no one had them done...Told them they had 5 more minutes to GET THEM DONE.

8:35 am.... Breakfast for real for the kids, which was just cereal and toast and milk.

9:00 am....Bible time...everyone took turns praying and then a chapter in the Old Testament (only it was the second half of a long chapter that we only did half of yesterday), and a chapter in the New Testament, John 3. Good chapter. No song this morning cause my voice sounds like a dying duck, as Cara would say....

9:30 am. Told kids to finish any chores that they didn't do before breakfast and GET BUSY on their Math..

10:00 am. Ate MY breakfast, which was some leftover frys (and Jackson got half of them anyway) and a caramel latte. Not the breakfast of champions, but oh well..... Washed the breakfast dishes and straightened up the kitchen, started, the laundry, etc. Then decided to waste my day on this live bloggy thing and so I have been doing that. Time to actually do something productive, so I can blog more in a while. Or not, we'll see.....

10:30 am. Reminded Joey to focus on his Math, corrected Rebecca's Math, helped her with the one she missed, corrected her writing and English, chatted with Jackson about his toy cars....reminded Joey to focus....

11:00 am. Corrected Joey's Math. Looked at Samantha's Math and grammar and told her to correct them (the older kids never know when when they will be correcting their work and when I will, and I watch them when they do it, thus making it hard for them to cheat....not that any of MY blessings would cheat...ahem....looked at Nick's math and watched him correct it while typing this.....sigh, he missed a lot, which he blamed on the fact that Rebecca (now being done with her morning work) and Jackson are making too much NOISE! They have taken every.single.toy. out.of.the.toybox, and have them scattered all over the kitchen. They are looking for something in particular, but haven't found it. Time to do a little preschool with Jackson.....

11:30 am. Got on facebook for a few minutes...checked Samantha's grammar and writing assignments....corrected Joey's English.....Cara gave me a precious piece of her birthday toffee from Walt--so yummy!--savored it slowly.....looked at Cara's English and talked to her for a few minutes.....looked at Nick's grammar...put shoes on Jackson so he could go outside with Samantha....Rebecca has most of the toy mess picked back up...told Joey to get back to work....told Joey to be quiet and get back to work....looked at Nick's writing....time to go start another laundry load.....

12:00 pm I fixed the kids lunch, which was sandwiches on yesterday's homemade bread and leftover corn, and then for dessert (as if lunch should even have a dessert) they all fixed themselves a bread with butter/cinnamon/sugar, which they microwaved for 10 seconds to melt the butter. Then it was a 5 minute pick up the house time, then I forced them all out into the beautiful day for their break time (why do I have to force them--it's sooooooo nice today?).....I washed the lunch dishes and cleaned up the kitchen-again.....(I do have a dishwasher but I just got tired of it's lousy cleaning and finally fired it and mostly wash dishes myself and use it for my draining rack--so I guess it won the battle, but I don't seem to mind washing the dishes much)...

1:05 pm Time for afternoon school, which consists mainly of reading books on lots of different subjects--sometimes history, sometimes science, sometimes literature, missionary biographies, etc.--For those who say you can't learn those subjects without a teacher, blackboard, assignments, and weekly tests, I say talk to my kids for a while and see if they aren't able to hold some pretty intelligent conversations. And I am not bragging, at least not on myself, but on them, because they learn all by themselves, without any help from me.--little mini-rant over now. :-) Cara also uses part of the afternoon reading time to work on Algebra. She already did Algebra earlier in her high school career, but.......well, she doesn't remember any of it and I suggested she go back through the books, cause if she wants to be a nurse, she will have to get past this loathing of Algebra.

1:10 pm. Since neither Jackson or I are feeling great, I decided we need a little rest. "Resting" consisted of me lying there with my eyes closed while Jackson drove his little cars over me and asked lots of 4-year-old questions.

1:45 pm. Because "resting" with Jackson was getting us no where, and because I could hear Joey totally butchering his piano practice (which he also does during the afternoon), I decided to get up and help him.

2:15 pm. Afternoon reading time continues.......

2:30 pm I called my wonderful Dad to wish him a happy 78th birthday. Had a nice chat with my mom too.

3:00 pm Read aloud time. We are currently reading a series of books called The Chronicles of Terrestria. It is sort of a Pilgrims Progress type of book, with the setting being the days of castles and knights, but written in modern day English. We are all enjoying this series immensely. Yes, I have to admit we had coffee today during read-aloud time, but that is the first time this week I have allowed my children the poison, so give me a break, ok? :-)

3:30 pm. Time for afternoon chores as follows--Cara-clean bathroom, Nick-mop kitchen floor, Samantha-fold laundry, Joey-clean out dishwasher, Rebecca-vacuum living room, library room, and my bedroom, Jackson-supervise and be cute, and I need to go and get dinner going.

5:00 pm. Most of the family ate dinner. We couldn't wait for Ralph because he will be later and the big kids are going to karate, and they needed to eat before they go. But Rebecca waited for Daddy. Dinner was Swedish meatballs, mac n cheese, and fruit cocktail. Rebecca is getting over a bug and so not going to karate, so we skipped the little kids class and Joey is going to try the big kids class tonight. Since no little kids class, Danny can just drive everybody, which works out since Ralph is late and I am still feeling under the weather and just want to sit in my chair for a bit.

5:45 pm. -- 7:45 pm. Ralph came home, big kids left for karate, talked to Ralph a bit, let him vent about all the cuts his work is proposing......washed dinner dishes, got on Facebook for a while, gave Jackson a bath, and a bunch of other little boring stuff like that. So I've decided this is about the most boring blog post I have ever done, and will quit wasting internet space now. I'm about to tuck the two littles into bed anyway........

Happy Birthday, Cara!

Happy 18th birthday to my crazy, opinionated, stubborn, sweet, affectionate, God-loving, talented, musical, beautiful inside and out, helpful, hardworking, loving, poetic, snuggly, virtuous, sometimes loud, sometimes shy, wonderful daughter, Cara.
(That's one adjective for each birthday, in case you missed count).
:-)
The big party is after church on Sunday, so pictures will follow after Sunday.
I love you, Cara!

Knee Update

Although Jackson's knee is still swollen, it's not bothering him anymore. So yea! Thanks for praying, if you did. :-)

Please pray if you see this

Yesterday I took Cara to a practice for the AWANA games, and then took the other kids to do their birthday shopping for Cara. Then Nick went back to the music store to buy a little mini-amp he wanted for his violin. After that, we had time to kill before picking Cara up, so we went to the park again. Just before time to leave, Jackson twisted his knee somehow on the slide. No one saw it, and he can't explain what happened, but it was sore right away and he didn't want to put any weight on it. We were hoping it would be better by today, but it was hurting him in the night and he still won't put any weight on it if he can avoid it. We are hoping it's gonna get better in a day or two and won't need x-rays. We will of course get him checked out if we feel it is needed; it would just cost alot of money (because our insurance stinks) and we are hoping that it's just swollen and not damaged in any way. He wants to go to church today to see his beloved Miss Marsha, so it's not so bad he can't do anything, but it is troubling that he won't put much weight on it so we'll see what develops in the next day or two.
So I'm just asking for prayer that it gets better soon. Thanks. That's all for now. Gotta get us all ready for church.
**Sunday Afternoon Update**
As the day has gone on Jackson has gotten much better. Still limping but not afraid to walk on it anymore. So hopefully things will keep improving. Thanks for any and all prayers.

Many words not saying much.....

Yesterday was a nice day, and I knew the rain was coming. And I had a bunch of errands that needed doing. Somehow someone mentioned that we should go to the park and I don't know what my response was, but Jackson took it that we were going to the park and he was so excited. I mean, to him it might as well have been a trip to Disneyland. So I told him, OK, after the errands were done we would go. This conversation took place in the morning. So all morning he asked if it was time to go yet. Finally after lunch it was time to head down. We had to drop things at the thrift store, get crickets for the frog and lizard, Nick needed to go to the music store to get a string for his violin, and then on to Walmart. First we needed to get every one socks, etc., and a couple needed jeans, and Becca needed some shoes--just a bunch of little things like that. Then we had to make our Bucket of Hope to send to Haiti. We had a specific list of things to get--rice, beans, flour, etc., but of course with my luck Walmart didn't have a couple of things in the specific sizes, so we had to make another stop. Finally, we made it to the park. Jackson was thrilled (and Joey and Becca had fun too). I guess it's been way too long since we've been to the park, but now that spring is coming, I guess we will have to make sure to get there more often--whether Nick likes it or not!
Today it's raining and dreary, but that's ok, cause all the errands are done and we have no place we have to go today. Yea! Wednesday is Awanas, Thursday we get to go and see my parents (finally made a day for that), and Friday is grocery shopping. So today we will just enjoy being at home and keep the fire going, and maybe have some afternoon tea at read-aloud time.
I love my job!
